http://news.runescape.com/newsitem.ws?id=1055[/url] -]Strange obelisks have been spotted underground and in the farthest reaches of RuneScape. What could they be for? Who put them there? And what do they have to do with our new members-only skill, Summoning?

One obelisk in particular has been causing trouble for Taverley's most well-known summoner, Pikkupstix, as a giant wolpertinger has used it to break free from the spirit plane. This pesky rabbit, wolf, reindeer...thing is now munching on Pikkupstix's bedclothes, and the druid needs your help to do a spot of banishing...

So begins this week's Wolf Whistle quest, which you will need to complete if you wish to start training the Summoning skill, in much the same way as Druidic Ritual opens up the Herblore skill.

To get more information on how to start Summoning, visit the Summoning - The Basics page in our Knowledge Base.

Once you have completed the Wolf Whistle quest, you can begin raising your stats on your way to the Summoning skillcape! Some of the familiars you summon can help in combat, healing you or attacking with claws, paws, missiles or magic. This is reflected in an increase to the maximum Combat level, taking it to 138. This increased Combat level is not visible on free worlds.

Other familiars aid you outside of combat, including the ability to store items for you - like the pack yak, which acts as a temporary bank for 10 of your items. Some have slightly...stranger effects. Might 'Fish Rain' interest you?

New creatures - barker toad and bunyip - share room with those that are more 'familiar', like the smoke devil (the relative of the dust devil) and the spirit dagannoth. Those with a high enough Summoning level will even be able to talk to them - but beware, they aren't used to talking to humans...

You will recognise many familiars from previous newsposts, wallpapers, Development Diaries and Postbags from the Hedge, while others will be a complete surprise! There is such a wealth of familiars - 53 in fact - that it'll take months for even the most persistent to master their abilities, special moves and Summoning requirements.

In addition, high-level Summoners will unlock an array of 22 new pets. New dogs are at the lowest level, while the hardest pet to tame is...drum-roll...a dragon!

Phew! There is barely a moment to remind you of the extra batch of Summoning familiars and pets coming next month. If you think some of the creatures in this update are big, wait till you see what February brings...

The quest, Wolf Whistle, certainly changed my opinion of Summoning. It looks really interesting and fun but it also looks really complicated as a skill to train. I'll just have to see. Right now, the game is a little slow due to the massive update.

The build-up was intense, but the actual skill itself, I'm really disappointed.. It's just so limited! I mean, it's advanced as a skill for RuneScape, but it's way too limited, there's hardly anything to do.. AND the price of it, like, WTF?? I remember reading that Summoning wasn't going to be cheap nor expensive. So much for that, aye?
pattercake22
anyone got any ideas on the best way to train it? everything seems to give so little xp :S

Jagex claims that you can make money off of this skill if you don't power train it, but actually use the pouches and scrolls you collect to summon monsters that help you with other skills. Yeah, like anyone wants to do that...

And they mentioned in today's news and announcements that they are halving the price of shards and returning compensation to the players that have already bought the shards at 50 gp each. That's good because I spent like 500K on shards. dry.gif

The skill is limited as well, I agree. There's nothing to do but other skills with it and that's no fun. The point of a new skill is to enjoy that skill, not use it to help you with other skills. Or that's at least what I like to do. I don't want to train Summoning to help me in Runecrafting or skills I never train (I don't train Runecrafting tongue.gif).

I'm not really impressed by the update as much as I was for a few other updates but I still think it is a great update. The leveling is a little bit too much like runecrafting but the rewards are even better. Idk really what to think yet.

Rewards as in..? A few crappy monsters that can hardly attack your enemy?

I completely agree. Jagex thinks we can actually make money off of using these monsters to our advantage when fighting to somehow possibly get "faster" kills, which might turn out to be faster money. Bull.

The whole skill update isn't even released. The next 50% of it could totally blow your mind away

I've been playing Runescape a little - because of summoning. And I'd have to say it sure is a pain to get those pesky charms sad.gif
pattercake22
anyone got any ideas where them two guys with 80 get their charms :S lol

80 already? ohmy.gif

The other 50% is just more familiars. I doubt they'll change the way we get charms, which is the work intensive part of the skill.
James
It'd be good if JAGeX could release a mini-game that gives Charms as a reward.
pattercake22
a minigame is a very good idea james smile.gif

Possibly a minigame where you have to use your familiar to defeat enemies

Nobody will play a game that uses charms to get charms.
king cut
this was the first time i ever got bored of a skill before level 80 at least...
with summoner i was beyond bored at lvl 8
at lvl 15 i gave up on it and decided to do a little minning for exitment... wooo hooo

seriously this stat is 99% pouchcrafting and 1% sumoning...
its like a cross between slayer, herblore, and runecrafting

3 boring steps of the pouch crafting skill....
first u gotta slay monsters for yer charms (mostly slayer monsters have decent charm drops)
second you have to collect secondary items (like herblore)
and third u have to craft your pouches... (almost exactly like runecrafting)

i give it a 1/10 just because some of the familiars look sweet... completly usless but still looks kewl.. kinda like Poh decorations...
