That date is a thing that people won't forget. It's THE dupe day, even tho there has been smaller scale duping before and after it and it wasn't even real duping, it was creating. A Person called SixFeetUnder was trying to make the scythe tradeable with a bot called Autorune. It didn't work, but he created something which could have given him a lot more wealth and fame than the scythe could have done. He found out how to create stackable items. He shared the information with few of his friends, but as we all saw few days later, someone leaked it. Crackers, party hats and dragon items (shield and medium helmets) were on the top of the list what were created, but not the only things.

This day of creation caused a huge fall in party hats and many people who hadn't even dreamt of them were now able to get one. The prices are currently at the skies, but without this day they'd most likely be a lot higher. The reason for duping dragon items was simple: they had the highest high alch value and could create some serious money in no time. It's easy to say now, but Jagex was rather slow back in then. Just by taking servers down and doing a small reset (like jumping back 1 day) they could have stopped the amount of certain items rising. It took them several hours to fix the bug and few days to ban all the accounts the dupers had logged on. There's still rumours of some accounts avoiding the ban, tho.

Normal players who had gotten free/cheap hats weren't banned, even tho some merchants probably hoped so. Some wiser merchants noticed it at the early stage that something was wrong and sold their phats, some suffered probably the biggest loss in whole RS history. Even many top players went nuts from free party hats as we can see some of them even trading the dupers and begging for free ones. Probably the same would happen today too, but it still makes me laugh to see some of those pictures.

Here's some bank pictures and pics from Varrock during that "event".

Moneywise they wouldn't be THAT superior in these days, you gotta remember how more money comes to the game all the time. However if even one of those banks would have been saved, we'd have the richest rs player of all times without any doubt. You can also imagine what would happen if same kind of a bug was found and abused same way in these days. I bet many merchants would go pretty mad tongue.gif

Here Jagex first informs that something is going on and then states the holes have been filled.

In this picture they are clearing the air a bit. They promised a free full life time membership to the one who gives the information to stop this thing. It's been rumoured that some of the dupers informed them and got banned after that. Even tho some are still in nowadays complaining that Jagex lied as they banned them, in my eyes it was the only real thing to do. After all member accounts can get permanently banned for breaking rules and that if something was against the gaming spirit.

Probably even under 2m tongue.gif

If I know right, Xx Jut Xx has gotten the credit for it even tho he did nothing. His site got pretty much info about the dupe day and one letter written in "me" form, but if I understood right, that letter is written by someone else and he just copied it.

I missed most of classic's 'famous events' sad.gif
lololo, JAGEX's reward MORE PHATS!!!?!?!?
Butters
Wow this is really neat to read about...I had no idea!

I am glad we have some resourceful people who are willing to share their knowledge with us....not many other forums/sites have this. ohmy.gif
Eragonj
When you think about it it's really weird how they are able to duplicate stuff like that, and then Jagex can just edit something and then b00m it stops. biggrin.gif
It's all a bunch of numbers and letters that makes it..

extremely old date:$ how funny it was tho to walk through fally and varrock and everyone wearing phats or saying "crack me" those were fun days:$
G-Runic?
Wow, no one really told stories about this at the forums I go to, this is cool. Love the story. I know it's really but that is unbelievible.
xx_____Pker
oh he was rich ohmy.gif
Jaskkes
Wish I was there.

It would be really interesting to see what the RS market for rares would be like at the moment though if this duping didn't happen. In the end it's a good thing that they found this out sooner (as in then) rather then them keeping the same loophole in RS2 and causing problems ohmy.gif

Although I still thought after hearing about the dupe for the first time that they should have rolled back the save games.

Things like that would never be able to stay in game for too long. If some rare item got duped, the market would soon be filled with them and someone would get suspicious. Little jump in supply could be explained by some rich stakers/merchants loading off their wealths and going for skilling or rl trading, but heck, imagine yourself into a situation where you knew you could create any items you want. Never in hell you would just create 1 or 2 phats, you'd create 1-2k.

Jeez.. Do you know how they actually did dupe them?

Make the server believe you give something in a trade which you didn't in reality. Basically it was trading nothing to nothing, but change the id number of nothing to an id number of some certain item. That's it in a nutshell.
Chaise
Would have been awesome to have all those phats todate..
